City park with animal park

Founded in 1870 by Wilhelm Ferdinand Mitscherlich (1826-1895), the city park, which offers space for rest and relaxation on a total of about twelve hectares in central location. Inside is also the animal park, a playground and the swan pond. Immediately at the trail station is the Rosarium. This is a real gem of gardening and landscaping and was created in 1932/1933 during the Great Depression as part of an ABM (job creation measure). The design idea for this rose garden come from the longtime city gardener Edwin Köhler.

In 2004, due in particular to the damage caused by the millennium flood in August 2002, deep drastic measures were necessary in the woody area. This covers alone 1200 to 1300 trees (without animal park).
